The future of the beauty industry will be shaped by its students. And to recognize major talent early on, SalonCentric hosted its first-ever student hairstyling contest with the FuturePro Awards. Current cosmetology students were encouraged to put their skill, creativity and innovative ideas on display with their best avant-garde work. The awards searched for unique, experimental and revolutionary hairstyles that push the envelope and go beyond traditional techniques and styles.
Kaylin Jackewicz (@kayjackhair) of Summit Salon Academy Tampa won the inaugural FuturePro Awards with her submission of “Briar Bliss” after being inspired by animal life and the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, “Sleeping Beauty.” “I loved the idea of horns and a flower field so the animal I channeled was a goat or ram in a flower field. The horns and crimped hair at the bottom represent the animal and the flower crown made of hair represents the flower field,” says Jackewicz. “Winning this award is astounding. I never thought I could actually excel in something like avant-garde, and I feel like this may shape my career in the future and set it on the right course.”
Contest entries for the awards ended on Sept. 10 and the grand prize winner received a trip to the newly launched Premiere Philadelphia on Sept. 23-24 for themselves and a guest. Plus, Mainstage award recognition by Daniel Mason-Jones and Jen Planck, class admission to Tabatha Coffey’s Elevate the Salon Experience class, and their very own image recreated live at the show as a larger-than-life graffiti mural by the @vitalebros.
